JTC  1/SC41 – Internet of Things and Related Technologies

JTC 1/SC41 was created by JTC 1 at its November 2016 Plenary in Lillehammer, Norway.  It inherited the program of work of JTC 1/WG7 (Sensors Networks) and JTC 1/WG10 (Internet of Things).

Its terms of reference are:

Scope: Standardization in the area of Internet of Things and related technologies.

  1. Serve as the focus and proponent for JTC 1’s standardization programme on the Internet of Things and related technologies, including Sensor Networks and Wearables technologies.
  2. Provide guidance to JTC 1, IEC, ISO and other entities developing Internet of Things related applications.

The resolution creating SC41 also stated explicitly that it was a systems committee.

It held it first plenary in Seoul, Korea, on May 28 – June 2, 2017.  It had 70 participants:

  • 12 P members, Canada, China, Germany, Finland, France, India, Japan, Korea, Russia, Sweden, UK, USA.
  • 3 O members, Australia, Luxembourg, Norway.
  • 3 External Liaisons, IIC, OGC, AIM.

Highlights of this first plenary were:

  • New organizational structure
  • Creation of an AG
  • Creation of six (6) Study Groups
  • Four A liaisons recommended
  • Outreach seminar
  • Progression of all (8) current projects
  • Eight (8) NWIPs considered
  • Two plenaries per year, integrated with WG and SG meetings
  • Plenaries tentatively planned till mid 2020

The second plenary was held in New Delhi, India, on November 13 – 17, 2017.  It had 77 participants:

  • 11 P members, Austria, Canada, China, Germany, India, Japan, Korea, Russia, Sweden, UK, USA.
  • 2 O members, Luxembourg, Norway.
  • 3 External Liaisons, IIC, ODC, AIM.

Highlights of this second plenary were:

  • Structure Meeting schedule
  • Completion of an SG (Edge Computing) and initiation of a TR on the topic
  • Outreach Seminar
  • Half Day WG Workshop
  • Creation of an Ad hoc on Business Plan
  • Creation of an Ad hoc on Communication and Outreach
  • Creation of an SG on Architecture and Vocabulary
  • Nomination of a Vocabulary Rapporteur

The third plenary was held in Berlin, Germany, on May 13-18, 2018.  It had 80 participants:

  • 17 P members: Australia, Canada, China, Germany, Finland, France, India, Ireland, Japan, Korea, Netherlands, Norway, Russia, Sweden, Switzerland, UK, USA.
  • 4 External Liaisons: GS1, INCOSE, IIC, AIM.

Highlights of this third plenary were:

  • Structured Meeting schedule
  • Completion of six (6) SGs  and creation (some through letter ballots) of five (5) – more on this topic later.
  • Half Day Tactical Workshop
  • Half Day WG Workshop
  • Creation of an SG on Architecture and Vocabulary
  • Nomination of a Use Case Rapporteur

Noteworthy was the publication after the third plenary of SC41 two foundational standards:

  • ISO/IEC 30141 – Internet of Things (IoT) – Reference architecture
  • ISO/IEC 20924 – Internet of Things (IoT) – Vocabulary

On 2018-10-22, the SC41 Chair was invited to make a presentation to the IEC Standards Management Board (SMB) at the IEC General meeting in Busan.  This presentation can be found here.
