1 Overview

In June 2020, WG 14 was established by JTC 1 at its plenary meeting. It serves as a systems integration entity to focus on JTC 1’s standardization program on Quantum Computing and maintain relationships with other related ISO and IEC/TCs and other organizations. The responsibility of WG 14 is to identify gaps and opportunities and develop deliverables in the area of Quantum Computing.

WG 14 is originally from JTC 1/SG 2 and AG 4. In March 2018, a report on advanced computing was presented at JAG meeting. Later JETI began the writing of the Quantum Computing Technology Trend Report (TTR). In November 2018, JTC 1 established SG 2 to improve the understanding of the state of standardization and to explore a possible role for JTC 1 at the 33^rd plenary meeting. In May 2019, JTC 1 reconstituted AG 4, strengthening research on applications and market demand, and accomplished the study report for Quantum Computing.

2 Scope

In the Virtual Meeting of ISO/IEC JTC 1 23-25 June 2020, JTC 1 WG 14 was established with following Terms of reference.

1) Serve as a focus of and proponent for JTC 1’s standardization program on Quantum Computing. Identify gaps and opportunities in Quantum Computing standardization.

2) Develop and maintain a list of existing Quantum Computing standards produced and standards development projects underway in ISO/TCs, IEC/TCs and JTC 1.

3) Develop deliverables in the area of Quantum Computing.

4) As a systems integration entity, maintain relationships with other ISO and IEC/TCs and other organizations that are involved in Quantum Computing standardization.

4 Membership

WG 14 has a growing team of experts including 110 experts from 19 national bodies up to March 2021. They are one convenor, one secretary, one TPM from ISO CS, 102 committee members and 5 document monitors. National bodies include Australia, Austria, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Korea (Republic of), Luxembourg, Netherlands, Russian Federation, Spain, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States.

WG 14 is making an effort to establish liaison relationships with these standard entities and has already received liaison statement from IEEE P7130 through JTC 1 committee manager, JTC1/SC38, ITU-T FG-QIT4N and ITU-T SG13. WG14 also have participated in IEC SMB/SWG 10 work to develop a White Paper on Quantum Information Technologies.
