Terms of Reference

  1. Analyze and develop use cases to support requirements for work items in the area of VR/AR/MR based ICT integration systems.
  2. Develop work item proposals related to VR/AR/MR based ICT integration systems.
  3. Cooperate with other standards groups (including ISO/TC 215, ISO/TC 232, IEC/TC 100, IEC/TC 62) in analysis and development of use cases and in development of work item proposals.

Membership is open to:

  1. Individuals nominated by National Bodies (representing the interests of their National Body);
  2. One representative per JTC 1 Liaison Organization;
  3. One representative per JTC 1/SC, JTC 1/WG, JTC 1 AG, relevant ISO and IEC Committees;
  4. Members of ISO Central Secretariat and IEC Central Office.

History

Integration of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) with industry is becoming more and more prevalent. This trend and the advance of related technologies will likely continue to the point where virtual worlds entirely represent and simulate real worlds and where people can live and work and engage in social and professional activities in those virtual worlds completely and seamlessly. For integration with industry, standards and standardization are required. JTC 1 technologies can be integrated with industries such as education and training, medicine, manufacturing, and others. In order to achieve standards based ICT integration with other domains, TC level collaboration with other TCs is a prerequisite, and so AG 13 continues to call for collaboration and participation.

A VR and AR based Education Ad Hoc Group was established at the JTC 1 Plenary Meeting, Vladivostok in 2017. Initially, the education and training area was the focus for VR/AR/MR integration. But based on the expanding usage of VR and AR technologies in many other domains including clinical practice, medicine, and manufacturing, AG 13 on use cases for VR and AR based ICT Integration Systems in JTC 1 was established at the JTC 1 Plenary Meeting, Hawaii in May 2019.  In addition to use cases, in consideration of work items for other related industries, the title and Terms of Reference was refined (as above) in November, 2020.
