With the advance of computer graphics, VR/AR/MR technologies have been developed and their usage is increasing in many industry fields.

This trend will continue to expand along with the progress of digital information technology as with the appearance of XR. VR/AR/MR/XR technologies are necessary to visualize and manage real world information in digital synthetic worlds. The real world can be represented and simulated in the synthetic world with corresponding similar functions. People in the real world can meet in the synthetic world. In addition, the synthetic world can have information that is integrated with the real world. People can see the real world through the synthetic world, and exist in both worlds.

ISO/IEC JTC 1/SC 24 is developing standards related to computer graphics, image processing, environmental data representation, and VR/AR/MR/XR.

SC 24 standards can be used for achieving real world simulation in a synthetic world using VR/AR/MR/XR technologies. Standards for reference models, information models, visualization, representation, and interfaces have been developed in SC 24.


SC 24 standards provide reference models, information models, data formats, system frameworks, and testing methods necessary for developing VR/AR/MR/XR applications and systems and can lead to enhanced productivity and economic gains. Resource and time savings can be obtained by implementing the standards because the methods and the models in the standards are inevitably required when developing these types of applications and systems.

Huge amounts of data for visual information is used for these applications and standard technologies provide the necessary efficiency of data and information modeling.
