Welcome to JTC 1’s 2nd quarterly newsletter, for exciting activities from April to June 2024.
What’s making the news this quarter? SC 32 brings you news of the release of a new standard on graphical query languages, we hear the highlights of JTC 1’s plenary meeting in Australia, the latest about diversity and inclusion, Cybersecurity matters, the onward march of digital twins and language translations.
New standards in query languages
These are exciting times for query languages, for standards development, for JTC 1 and experts in SC 32 Data Management and Interchange who have worked to develop this new standard. The publication of ISO/IEC 39075:2024 Information Technology – Database languages – GQL marks a new chapter in the history of query languages, revolutionizing the way we interact with and harness the power of interconnected data. GQL represents a significant step forward in data querying and manipulation, offering a unified and expressive language for navigating complex graph structures. With a standardized framework for querying graph databases, GQL breaks down barriers to data interoperability and empowers developers, researchers, and businesses to unlock new insights, discover hidden connections, and create new innovations

Diversity and inclusion.
A topic that has been at the top of people’s minds is Diversity and Inclusion. Diversity and Inclusion is a focus of both ISO and IEC with guidance for addressing Diversity and the Inclusive language policy for standards. JTC 1 is also doing its part in promoting diversity and inclusion. JTC 1 wants to embrace diversity and make everyone feel welcome and included in participating in JTC 1. With this in mind a small dinner was coordinated for “Celebrating Diversity in JTC 1”. This dinner was to bring together people to celebrate the Diversity of JTC 1. It affords an opportunity for people to talk in a casual environment and get to know others that are also working in JTC 1. This was only the second time that JTC 1 has held this small get together and it has had great feedback from those that have attended.
This small gathering met during the May JTC 1 plenary, near the meeting venue at a restaurant called Hot Tamale and everyone had a chance to try the tacos and salads on the menu. The dinner was outside near the water so allowed for a fun festive atmosphere. Having people who have attended many meetings and some that were at their first meeting of JTC 1 allowed for sharing of experiences and a chance to get to know one another. It is hoped that this will be a regular feature at future JTC 1 plenary meetings.

Digital Twins, planning the future
While digital twins are used widely across many domains, the demand for them is growing as they are becoming fundamental aspects in widespread planning applications. For instance, in the context of a smarter city, city planning, local authorities, councils and other responsible departments are utilizing modern technology to help plan, build, monitor and maintain developing and expanding cities. Using a growing array of sensors, like car detection in parking spaces, video sensor grids for traffic movement and drones for 3D structural data capture, city planners are bringing the data together to provide a real-time virtual image (thus a ‘digital’ twin) of what’s happening in the world. Having a virtual picture also allows for planning to be considered in an environment that will not harm the real world and allow for ideas to be tested in a safe environment. Situations can thus be tested, problems found and subsequently fixed with no impact.

JTC 1 is contributing to these advancements through its foundational standards development such as ISO/IEC 30141 Internet of Things – Reference Architecture, ISO/IEC 30173 – Digital Twin Concepts and terminology and ISO/IEC 30188 – Digital Twin Reference Architecture, currently under development.
Along with other standards development and collaborative work with non-IT sectors groups like the IEC Systems Committees on Smart Cities and Smart Energy and IEC TC 65 the usefulness of digital twins will continue to grow and help shape our future landscape.

JTC 1 Plenary in Australia
May 13th to 17th, JTC 1 met at the Darwin convention centre, Northern Territory, Australia for its first meeting of 2024. As always, the discussions were vibrant among the 28 participating nations with a significant focus on looking ahead and addressing important new challenges. Areas of discussion included the World Economic Forum (WEF), Consumers, Metaverse and Data Management and Data Governance. For all these four areas new groups were established to facilitate further and more detailed discussions which will help shape the way forward for JTC 1.
These highlights and more can be found in the May 2024 plenary highlights document which can be found here: https://jtc1info.org/2024-May-JTC1-Plenary-Highlights.pdf

Information Security, Cybersecurity and Privacy Protection
Security and privacy are topics that feature across all sectors of business and affects citizens and society as a whole – topics that make headline news across the globe.
JTC 1/SC 27 is a centre of excellence for the development of standards covering information security, cybersecurity and privacy protection, consequently its scope is very diverse covering management systems, cryptography, security evaluations, security services and privacy applications.
SC 27 is well known for its best-selling, high-profile standard ISO/IEC 27001 (information security management system – requirements) and supporting standards ISO/IEC 27002 and ISO/IEC 27005.
SC 27 is also developing standards to cover the security and privacy aspects of several advanced technologies including Internet of Things (IoT), AI, Big Data, industrial Internet, Cloud Services, network and applications security. For example, the ISO/IEC 27400 series deals with IoT security and privacy.
Privacy is a topic of continuing concern to all users of technology and on-line services. SC 27 has addressed this at different levels such as: protection of biometric information, PII protection, biometrics on mobile devices, on-line access with age assurance and verification, and on-line privacy notices and consent.
SC 27 also publishes a Journal 2 to 3 times a year featuring articles from editors and experts involved in the development of standards. These are published on the ISO hosted SC 27 site https://committee.iso.org/home/jtc1sc27. SC 27 runs several on-line seminars and conferences including the annual International 27001 Day.

Online Standards Development
As many of you may have heard, ISO and IEC have spent the last few years developing online standards development (OSD) tools to assist with drafting and managing early stage commenting up to DIS ballot. At the June ISO Technical Management Board and IEC Standardization Management Board meetings, both organizations agreed to take adoption of the tool a step further, with plans for OSD to be the default platform for new projects beginning in January 2025. While the ISO and IEC IT teams work further to enhance the features of the tool, ISO and IEC will be stepping up training options for staff and technical committees in the coming months. Although some JTC1 Subcommittees already may have experimented with OSD, ISO and IEC are encouraging all technical committees and national bodies to get familiar with this new technology.
While there are a number of links available below, your Technical Officers and Technical Program Managers will have more information to share as the new year approaches.
