JTC 1/SC 32/WG3 Database Languages

At a recent JTC 1 meeting, Jörn Bartels (an SC 32/WG3 participant from Germany) opened a conversation with Firuza Bahri from the Azerbaijan Standardization Institute. This conversation resulted in SC 32/WG 3 Database Languages meeting in Baku, Azerbaijan during the week of September 23, 2024.
Multiple individuals from the Azerbaijan standards institute warmly welcomed WG 3 and participated in the meetings.
During the Baku meeting, WG 3 continued developing the next revision of the database language standards, ISO/IEC 9075 SQL and 39075 GQL. Major technical topics included:
- Support of AI and Retrieval Augmented Generation in databases, in particular the addition of vector types and vector operations for the next edition of SQL.
- Enhancements and corrections for the GQL standard
Kamala Mammadzada from the Azerbaijani standards institute organization arranged for a two-hour outreach workshop on WG 3 standards and invited representatives of the Azerbaijan Information and Communication Technologies Industry Association and the Ministry of Digital Development and Transport. In total people from 10 different organizations participated.
WG 3 participants presented the Database Language Standards Workshop. The workshop topics were:
- SC 32/WG 3 Standards context & process, recent efforts, and current directions
- Property Graphs in GQL
- Property Graphs in SQL
Next meeting is on November 18th, 2024 (Virtual)
