Welcome to JTC 1’s quarterly newsletter, new for 2024. We hope to bring you interesting insights from all areas of JTC 1 that you may not be aware of. What’s in the news in 2024 so far? Metaverse, International Women’s Day, Bio-digital Convergence, the rise of Artificial Intelligence, and Developing Countries.
JTC 1 Emerging Technologies Initiative (JETI) completes the Technology Trend Report (TTR) on Metaverse.
A lot of people are talking about it including JTC 1. Metaverse is rapidly gaining a lot of momentum in ISO and IEC, and JTC 1 has stepped up see what it can do to help shape the Metaverse with international standards. JETI have just completed their TTR on this subject which pulls together many references of work going on in the wider world Metaverse. It describes JTC 1 standards and standardization efforts that are needed in the complete and all-encompassing range of the Metaverse area. This is JTC 1’s entry point in to the Metaverse and it’s expected that more focus will be given to this topic in the near future.
International Women’s Day, ‘Women in Tech’ and raising the profile of inclusion.
It should come as no surprise that inclusion and diversity is high on JTC 1’s agenda, as it rightly should be. International Women’s Day (IWD) is now behind us (March 8th) but on the run up to that date there was feverish activity in JTC 1/AG 1, Communications. AG 1 worked with an elite team of eight women, in JTC 1 to develop a series of promotional videos, highlighting who they were, what they did, why they were in JTC 1 and the value that they brought to standards development.
Five videos were published on YouTube over five consecutive weeks leading up to IWD and the viewing rate can be seen as a definite success. All the women that participated took time out of their daily life to record themselves so that these short videos could be created, and we thank them for their efforts.

Bio-digital Convergence, is it a big deal?
The answer seems to be a resounding Yes! It could revolutionise healthcare, change the way manufactured goods are designed and assist in environmental protection. The IEC system evaluation group 12 also think so, and their work has resulted in the proposal for the establishment of a new System Committee on Bio-digital Convergence (BDC), called SyC BDC. BDC has been quoted as the point of “convergence of engineering, nanotechnology, biotechnology, information technology and cognitive science”. Not only will the new System Committee work in collaboration with many ISO and IEC technical committees but will have a strong connection to JTC 1 subcommittees (SC) including 7, Software and systems engineering, 38, Cloud computing and distributed platforms, 42, Artificial intelligence and 43, Brain computer interfaces. JTC 1/SC 41 IoT and digital twins will also have a very close relationship as the chair of SyC BDC is Dr François Coallier, the chair of SC 41. Artificial Intelligence, keeping it in check
It doesn’t matter where you go these days, Artificial Intelligence (AI) is never far away, in your kitchen, in the car, up a remote mountain carried by you in your pocket (your smart phone). The march of AI is relentless and we’re going to see it become more prolific as we go forward. JTC 1/SC 42 has made the news, world-wide with the publication of the standard ISO/IEC 42001:2023 Artificial Intelligence, Management System. 42001 is aimed firmly at organizations giving guidance on how to use AI, develop it and understand it, so that organizations can act ethically and responsibly when working with AI. Because of the rapid rise of AI and the risks it can pose, governments and policy makers have been quick to respond, and national and regional acts are coming in to force in response to it. 42001 goes a long way address many of the concerns being raised by nations.

Expansion and awareness in developing countries
An initiative that was seen in late 2023 is being promoted again to engage with more standards development organizations in developing countries. This time directly connected to Artificial intelligence, experts from several countries and their national bodies will participate in the April 2024 plenary for SC 42. These will include Laos, Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Thailand. ISO will be running special training sessions for these experts on the standards development process.
