| Thirty national bodies took part in the November 2024 plenary held in Seoul, Korea, supported by the National Radio Research Association (NRRA), Telecommunications Technology Association (TTA) and the Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI). This plenary was notable for the attendance of several national bodies that typically do not participate in person. On this occasion, representatives from Ecuador, Trinidad and Tobago, and Zimbabwe were able to be physically present, adding a diverse and enriching perspective to the discussions.
During the five-day meeting, all JTC 1’s subcommittees, working groups, advisory groups and adhoc groups had the opportunity to present updates on their recent activity, immediate business plan, challenges and good-news stories. Many of these items promoted healthy discussions, leading to positive actions to further enhance the group’s position and direction. |

Consumer protection
Following six months of examination, detailed discussion and documentation, JTC 1’s adhoc group 9 presented their findings in relation to potential scopes to support the establishment of a new subcommittee on Consumer related aspects of privacy. The report was a welcome step in helping to finalise the actions to allow for an agreement to be made on the new subcommittee’s scope. JTC 1 endorsed one of the options proposed by AhG 9, and after some additional fine tuning agreed on the way forward for the establishment of the following subcommittee, subject to approval by ISO/TMB and IEC/SMB:
SC 44 Information technology – Consumer protection in the field of privacy by design
Scope: Standardization of consumer protection in the field of privacy by design for products, goods and services, including their data lifecycles.
The proposal also sees the UK National Body as the secretariate and Jan Schallaböck from Germany as the subcommittee chair.
JTC 1 Emerging Technologies Initiative (JETI), survey results
| JTC 1’s advisory group 2 (JETI) presented the results and the report following the 2024 annual survey. It highlighted that out of the current list of possible technology candidates, some appeared to be considerably higher in importance than others including: Artificial general intelligence, Sustainable ICT, Intelligent uncrewed systems and Cross border data flow (DFFT). Noting the results of the report that were presented, the advisory group will now take the data back to the group and analyse it further to decide how some of the technologies can be moved forward to establish them, ultimately as standards within JTC 1. |

| JTC 1 made the following changes in leadership of SC Chairs:
SC 6 Telecommunications and information exchange between systems sees the departure of the Chair Dr. Hyun K. Kahng and welcomes his replacement Dr. Shingak Kang SC 25, Interconnection of information technology equipment sees the departure of the Chair Rainer Schmidt and welcomes his replacement Matthias Fritsche. SC 39, Sustainability, IT and Data Centres sees the departure of the Chair David Reiner and welcomes his replacement Ricardo Gonzalez Llera. |

Succession planningThe work by the adhoc group (8) on Succession planning continue to progress well. The group has been reconstituted until May 2025 and will present its final outcome of the guidance document at the May Plenary meeting. |

LiaisonsThe following Liaison organizations attended in person and reported their updates: ISO TC 307 and ECMA International. These updates from ISO TC 307 and ECMA International reflect their ongoing efforts to advance standards in their respective fields and their commitment to contributing to the global standards community [Left to right: Sal Francomacaro ISO TC307, Samina Husain ECMA International]. ICAO, which was approved as a JTC 1 liaison earlier in 2024, presented a liaison report which gave an overview of the organization and its work. |
