Automatic identification and data capture (AIDC) technologies identify, track and trace items, and are vital to modern life. They are used in many industries, such as logistics, apparel, automobile, healthcare, toll management, tourism and rail.
On 9-10 June, SC 31, which develops international standards for AIDC, held its virtual plenary, resulting in 10 resolutions.
Henri Barthel, Chair of SC 31 welcomed participants and highlighted JTC 1 resolutions and discussions arising from the November 2020 and May 2021 plenaries on the topics of vocabulary, future work programme and horizontal deliverables.
“The meeting was excellent with positive engagement and contributions from all participants”, said Barthel. “Three new barcode standards will be published in the near future. A new version of ISO/IEC 18000-63, the most popular standard for RFID at Ultra-High Frequency, now including sensor data capture, will be published at the end of July. New proposals for AIDC application standards for the construction and clothing sectors will be addressed by SC 31 in the coming year.”
Resolution highlights
As technologies continue to develop rapidly, it is important that standards developers keep up to date with market needs while keeping an eye on future developments. An ad hoc group was established on the future SC 31 work programme and structure. The group will investigate potential future work items in AIDC, liaise with JTC 1/AG 02 advisory group on Emerging Technology and Innovation (JETI), and propose the SC 31 organizational structure to meet the current and future needs.
New appointments
In usual business, new working group (WG) convenors were appointed for WG 1, data carrier, and WG 8, application of AIDC standards and standards and a call was issued for a new convenor for WG 2, data and structure.
Project editors were appointed for the upkeep of five standards published between 2006 and 2016.
A new Category A liaison was decided with the RAIN Alliance, a global alliance promoting the universal adoption of Ultra-High Frequency (UHF) RFID technology.
Vocabulary
The SC 31 Vocabulary Rapporteur’s responsibilities were defined to cover continuous maintenance of ISO/IEC 19762 for the harmonized vocabulary for AIDC techniques, collect and manage SC 31 definition requirements for future vocabulary revisions as well as contribute to the JTC 1 Advisory Group for Vocabulary.
The meeting concluded with appreciations to convenors, participants, the secretariat and Chair of SC 31 for their dedication and excellent work.
