Plenary highlights – September 13th – 17th 2021
Anish Karmarkar did a great job stepping in as acting chair during the latest SC 38 plenary. Anish will continue to act as interim chair until a permanent replacement is approved by JTC 1 at the November plenary.
It was a busy plenary with a full agenda, requiring an extra session to be scheduled to allow more in-depth talks on a new proposal relating to a multi-cloud environment.
Highlights and outcomes include the following new focus areas:
• Multi-cloud interoperability and portability
• Digital Sovereignty
• Trustworthiness of cloud services
Appointments
It was confirmed that Seungyun Lee, from Korea was to be appointed for another three-year term as convenor of working group 3 (Cloud Computing Fundamentals).
It was also confirmed that Fernando Gebara Filho, from Brazil would be reappointed as convenor of working group 5 (Data in cloud computing and related technologies) for another three-year term.
John Britton, US, stepped down as convenor of advisory group 5 (Long-term strategy) but will be replaced by Geoff Clarke from Australia.
SC 38 also expresses its appreciation to the outgoing SC 38 chair, Mr Steve Holbrook, US, for his active participation in SC 38 for many years and for his exemplary leadership as SC 28 chair. Steve helped open the door for SC 38 to be “Cloud computing and distributed platforms”. In addition, he is one of the people that made SC 38 successful and influential in the new world of cloud computing.
