Purpose of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1
The World Trade Organization (WTO) Technical Barriers to Trade (TBT) agreement assigns special status to International Standards. The WTO TBT Committee and defined six principles for the development of International Standards tat are used to determine if standards are
international.

3. Impartiality and consensus
4. Effectiveness and relevance
5. Coherence
6. Development dimension

The ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1, define the procedure for the technical work to safeguard these fundamental principles in the development of International Standards and other documents.
